The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) classifies every race by a code that tells you two things: how long it is and how important it is.
The first number in any code tells you the format of the race. 1.X races are one-day (like a classic or a Monument) while 2.X races are multi-day stage races, ranging from a 2-day event to the 21-day men’s Grand Tours.
WorldTour races are the “major leagues” of cycling, where the world’s top teams always show up. 1.UWT & 2.UWT (UCI WorldTour) is the men’s elite level. This includes the Tour de France (2.UWT) and Paris-Roubaix (1.UWT). 1.WWT & 2.WWT (Women’s WorldTour) is the women’s elite level. This includes the Tour de France Femmes (2.WWT) and Strade-Bianche Donne (1.WWT).
Introduced in 2020, the ProSeries category is more like the “AAA” level. These races are still highly prestigious but allow for a mix of top-tier WorldTour teams and second-division ProTeams.
Continental races are also referred to as “Class 1” races. They are slightly less prestigeous than the top-tier races, but make up the backbone of the racing calendar. In these events, up-and-coming talent often gets their first chance to race against WorldTour pros!

Top Highlights in March:
Strade Bianche & Strade Bianche Donne
Often called “The Sixth Monument,” this race is famous for the white gravel roads of Tuscany! The finish in Siena, after a brutal final climb, is one of the most gorgeous sights in the cycling world.
Milano-Sanremo
“La Primavera” is the first of cycling’s five Monuments, and it’s not one to miss. This is the LONGEST one-day race on the calendar, clocking in at nearly 300km for the men. It’s a tactical day that almost always explodes on the final two climbs: the Cipressa and the iconic Poggio.
Paris-Nice & Tirreno-Adriatico
We can’t choose! These two week-long men’s stage races run at the same time. The world’s best talent is split, and so is the competition. Paris-Nice is called “The Race to the Sun” and tackles the crosswinds and mountains of France. Meanwhile, Tirreno-Adriatico or “The Race of the Two Seas” crosses the rugged heart of Italy. This is the first time in the season we see the GC stars, including the Tour de France contenders, go head-to-head in stage racing.
Gent–Wevelgem
As the calendar moves into Flemish territory, this race brings the peloton to the windswept plains of Belgium. It’s also famous for the Kemmelberg, a steep, cobbled climb. Don’t miss the “plugstreets” either, the gravel sectors that go through WWI battlefields.
E3 Saxo Classic
A race sometimes called the “Mini Tour of Flanders!” This one uses many of the same cobbled climbs, like the Paterberg and Oude Kwaremont, making it a fantastic end-of-March challenge. It’s also the perfect barometer of who will be competitive enough to win the big Monuments in April.
What’s coming up next? In April, we’ll continue our foray into the spring Classics with some of the best racing of the entire year. March may pass us by quickly, but don’t miss your chance to catch some of the earlier classics. Who knows, you might catch a once-in-a-lifetime “lucky” win for some of the world’s best cyclists!
